Damen Schelde Marine Services has signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) to supply diesel engine parts to Pertamina Marine Engineering (PME). PME is a subsidiary of PT Pertamina Trans Kontinental (PTK), part of the Indonesian state-owned Pertamina Group. Due to the broad maritime reach of the Pertamina Group, the MoU is an exciting step forward in DSMS’ business in Indonesia.

DSMS Commercial Manager Asia Ezra Lamers is very enthusiastic about the new collaboration. “We are looking forward to building a strong relationship with the Pertamina Group. With this MoU, we will be supplying diesel engine parts to the Pertamina Group and domestic shipping firms, and potentially the Southeast Asian oil and gas market too. It strengthens our position in the Southeast Asian market as a premium quality supplier.”

Furthermore, Ezra sees this MoU as a great opportunity to expand the DSMS network further in Indonesia. “For example, since signing this MoU, we have already been in contact with ship management companies who have Pertamina vessels under their management: big names like Bernhard Schulte and the Synergy Marine Group.”

And because Pertamina is a state-owned company, Ezra hopes that the MoU will “help open doors to other companies active in Indonesia”. Given that these companies are also active internationally, this could have positive effects throughout the Damen Shipyards Group. “This could possibly open up business is for Damen’s ship repair and new build operations.”

The MoU was signed back in March at the Asia Pacific Maritime Exhibition in Singapore during which PME hailed the collaboration as a pivotal move. PME carries out vessel repairs at its two shipyards, Dockyard Sorong and Dockyard Bagus Kuning, as well as across Indonesia. With DSMS supplying a continuous supply of spare diesel engine parts, PME will be able to enhance the reliability of the Pertamina Group’s fleet.

Besides its office in Singapore, DSMS works with local agents. With this in mind, Ezra says that “we are grateful to be working with the Basoeki family of P.T. Graha Kartika who represent us in Indonesia”. This has been a fruitful collaboration: “Since the end of last year, we have together been increasing our business massively in Indonesia, particularly in the maritime and power plant sectors.”
