No fewer than three Damen Naval-built ships took part in the 29th edition of the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC 2024) naval exercise. For the first time, a Dutch naval vessel participated in the exercise: air defence and command frigate HNLMS Tromp was involved in a very special exercise. In addition, SIGMAs KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata of Indonesia and ARM Benito Juárez of Mexico also had a nice role to play.

HNLMS Tromp helped out during a sinking exercise. The decommissioned ship USS Tarawa was the target of a missile attack and a Harpoon missile was launched from the Tromp. This was the highlight of the training for the crew. “It was very impressive to actually sink a ship,” Command Centre Officer Tjerk told www.defensie.nl. “It was instructive to apply all the procedures and use the ship’s systems for their intended purpose.”

Between 26 June and 2 August 2024, 40 naval ships, 170 aircraft and land units from a total of 29 countries took part in the exercise. Participants train all aspects of maritime warfare, including those in the highest spectrum of force. The exercise is held every two years in and around Hawaii. The exercise is organised by the United States Navy Indo-Pacific Command, headquartered in Pearl Harbor, in cooperation with the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard and the Hawaii National Guard, under the supervision of the governor of Hawaii.
